Played very well yesterday, should have won the game 5 or 6-1 and thats being kind to Stennie.Gavin Swankie should have scored, but was unlucky with his two shots off the post, and his two headers he some how missed when it was easier to score from 2 yards. How John McGlashan and Iain Diack missed there chances i'll never know,2-3 yards out and somehow put the ball over the bar.We had 2 or 3 penalty claims turned down in the second half as yet again Arbroath seem to end up with a bad ref again. And how the Stennie no.3 stayed on the park i'll never know, after being booked he rugby tackled Andy Cagill as he made his way towards goal. And heard that Mark McCulloch has signed up until January, great news he played very well yesterday, but don't think he can play at Stirling next week,i think you have to be signed two weeks before the tie.

Well it's probably a delightful in-joke among those in the know but back to the fitba. Never made it yesterday but seems to have been a spirited performance even if they couldn't bury it earlier. The reports mention will-to-win which is one of the differences with the home performances of late. Noticed Cusick is out again - presumed injured - which is a perennial pain. But having Diack back so quick is a bonus. Three tough away games now on the trot so hope we can improve our miserable away record (unbeaten after 2). Having always played tow more homes than away we could easily get sucked into the relegation battle. But beating the likes of Stenny gives extra value since it keeps them down. We need to do better than point-a-game over the season though - that's relegation

Question - What does Referee Scott MacDonald want from Santa this year?
Answer - BALLS!!, and maybe a new watch, where did he get those 5 minutes from?
Number 3, was yellow carded then minutes later hacked down Cargill at the edge of the box, and should have been shown another, some of the challenges by their defenders were shocking, and the referee kept on telling players to stop wasting time, but seemed to take a blind eye to the serious fouls. The linesmen as well should learn to speak up, I think it was Rennie got booked for taking the free kick in the wrong place, yet he was inline with the linesman’s flag.
A spirited performance from Arbroath today, which could have seen us score 5-6 in the first half. It was my first sight of Diack and he looks a quality acquisition.. Strong and powerful, good on both feet, and has a good eye for goal. Marc Mculloch played well, had some great touches and can turn players in a flash. The Whole team played well, I just thought we sat back too much after about 70 minutes. Swankie was unlucky with his shot that hit the bar, but I think he knows he should have scored with his header in the last minute, after a super run from Cargill. Cargill and McGlashan were superb and great leaders for the younger players. Flyer also had a storming game, and King’s never say die attitude is first class.
Should have killed the game earlier, but a win is a win! Well done lads.

Are you sure that only 1 bus will be needed, the talk in there is hunners going. GREAT GAME TODAY, COULD SO EASY HAVE BEEN 5 - 2 TO THE LICHTIES. WE SHOULD HAVE BURIED THEM BY HALF-TIME INSTEAD OF BITING OUR NAILS IN THE SECOND HALF. THOUGHT MCCULLOCH AND DIACK SHOWED GOOD TOUCHES AND DEMONSTRATE VALUED ADDITIONS TO THE POOL. KIRKIE HAS AT LAST IDENTIFIED OUR WEAKNESS AND IS RECTIFYING SAME. I DONT THINK HE HAS TO DO MUCH MORE TO GET THE JOB ON PERMANENT BASIS. HAVING TAKEN POINTS FROM ALL THE TEAMS ABOVE US (EXCEPT MORTON)THE SECOND PLACE IS A REAL POSSIBILITY. COME ON THE LICHTIES ! Gutted!!! What more can I say.
I managed to get to watch the Sky Sports football coverage on saturday so saw all the scores coming up. I would have loved to have been there, a 10 goal thriller, and after being gubbed earlier in the season by the same side 4 - 0, to get the 4 back that they put past us and still be on the losing side is gutting.
It is quite refreshing for the Lichties to be putting the ball in the back of the net as they don't seem to have been scoring much previously. Now shore that defence up.

Wow, can't remember when the Lichties last scored four so it's tough to end up on the losing side. I'd opt for losing 6-4 than 2-0 any day - and it seems to have been a spirited performance. (incidentally that's a season's aggregate of 14-7 to Morton over the three games this year. I hope they can carry this determination through and start earning some deserved results - we're perilously close to the bottom. Cusick has been a key figure in making the team work for a the past 3 seasons - wish he could stay fit.

Congratulations to the players on a committed and gutsy performance this afternoon, following on from a similar effort on Tuesday. It's a travesty we only have one point to show for it. The signing of Diack and the return of Cusick has transformed the team from the ragged outfit who finished against Hamilton. I just hope they are both recovered from their injuries for next week's "must win" against Stenny.
I don't know whether there will be a report on the website but from my biased point of view Morton scored one goal (the third?) from a clearly offside position (I think the linesman's flag was up but he quickly took it down again), and their final goal came from a long punt following a clear foul on Cargill deep in the Morton half. Up till then 5-5 was a definite possibility, with Arbroath doing all the pressing!

Having had no luck in getting to a computer (this place isn't as bad as a third world country - but very close) I eagerly opened the website to follow the inane chatter from the lichtie fans and was extremely impressed with the match report from Tuesday vs Airdrie. The reporter was obviously on a high from the match and it made thrilling reading, on a par with being at the match I'll bet. There seemed to be so much positive about the performance - especially the new youngster - and very little in a bad light.
I'm writing this at 4pm local - 3pm Lichtie time - and am awaiting with baited breath the shock that Morton so dearly need. The Lichties seem to have a big game in them today, like I said the match report hinted as such.

BELLROCK, there will only be a bus going to Stirling if we get 20 or more people to definately go. The '36-0' club cannot afford to put on a bus if people are not going to turn up. This happened at the first away game of the season (Greenock Morton), and ended up costing the club alot of cash. If you are definately wanting to travel on the bus please get in touch with Sandy Ferguson on 01241 879704.
Regarding the bus to Forfar, I do not know if there will be one. If we get a good response to the Stirling game then I am sure the club will think about putting 1 (or 2?) buses on.

re Swankie-
He did have a good game, as he was much more unselfish. If a player (usually Diack) was in a good position he was passing the ball to them rather than trying to do it all himself (which he is prone to do). He laid the goal on a plate for Diack.
re Diack
He missed a sitter early on from another Swankie cross, but a settling in period has got to be expected. He is certainly quick and works hard. Did well to lose his man for the goal.
Overall performance
I thought we played well below par (for the strength of side we had on). It seemed we didn't hit our stride until we scored. We could have won it late on but a draw was a fairer result.

Tough to praise those guys, as they have overseen the blackest period financially in the history of the club. Though I guess if Bill Leckie said it then it must be true. What would the regular members that see the balance sheet every season at the AGM know?
It seems that most of the newer ideas for bringing in some much required cash are coming from the newer members of the committee and defintely not the old guard.

the comments re swankie are on lichties news questioning his non appearance at hamilton. As regards the overdraft the committee do not have a budget so how can they possibly control cash. The new committee members are doing a good job, but sadly the old guard of christeson riply and kinnear are holding the club back, and who is it that votes to get rid of them. They do, that is why arbroath will always be held back

Agreed with maroonie. Dundee, board, management, fans and of course the players in on the feeding frenzy were clearly living in a fool's paradise. Where did it get them - a one-sided cupfinal and the first round in UEFA Cup. And the sounds coming out from the Administrator sounds like there may be no future. I'd rather Arbroath did an East Stirling - fall to the bottom but survive rather than be dragged under. This 150,000 overdraft is a heavy burden for a struggling club with limited potential (what is it - the equivalent of 3 season's takings? I know us fans are always moaning and demanding better players but its up to the Committee to keep their eye on the ball long-term and ensure that we don't stretch things too far financially pursuing an unrealistic ideal (even Div 1 is beyond us,as much as well-oiled Brechin, I feel). They've started to communicate so real fans will understand if we have to make do. But they're always the occasional cup bonanza and maybe in the distant horizon a the occasional drug baron looking to do a bit of money laundering

After the revelations which have come out at Dundee FC, I will take great interest at this years AGM to see if our committee are taking any steps to reduce the reported £150,000 deficit in club funds. While this was incurred due to the need to replace the old stand, and it is a one off ( until the next time) the committee should still be taking steps to reduce, and finally repay it. I sincerely hope that they are not burying their heads in the sand , like a certain pair of brothers in Dundee, and do have a plan devised to solve this problem, because it will not go away of it's own accord. While I wish to see the club compete at the highest level possible, I for one would rather see us survive at any level, than go out of business, as I suspect might happen to Dundee FC. The Bank of Scotland have given a warning to clubs, with their refusal to throw more money at Dundee, so I say to the committee, take heed of this because those who do not start to live within their means will fall.

I didn't see any remarks about Gavin Swankie, good or ill. Has you been on the piss also? Sees to me there's a lot of goodwill among fans towards young local players like Gavin Swankie, and willingness to see them succeed. Most criticism seems to be constructive. But in GS case, a bit of frustration that he's not fulfilling his potential. May not take much but a coupla goals to give confidence and a bit more presence/strength/determination in the box. Well he's got the chance to show what he's made of whenever he comes on so it's up to him

Perform better at home? Well that's an real optimist's way of looking at it. As the team with the worst away record in the league yet miraculously not bottom, thank goodness we've scraped a few results on the sacred home turf. Bit of a test this weekend with the mighty Airdrieonians (oops that's their old name)- they're underperfoming too but better to underperfom in the opponents' half or the the top half of the league. I once got thrown out of a home game with Airdrie once for demonstrating excessive santiary hygiene (the traditional custom of bogroll throwing, once an artform). Is it time to revive this to bring back the festive homegames of yore.

The latest news from Dens is looking pretty desperate - about 20 players and staff sacked!! What an absolute tragedy.
I dont want to look like a vulture picking over the bones but could one or two of the younger & less expensive guys be taken on at Gayfield for a few months??
List includes Kenny Cameron, Kevin Lee, Javier Artero, Paul Mathers, Craig Burley, Fabian Caballero, Juan Sara, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Beto Carranza, Mark Robertson, Barry Forbes, Jamie Langfield, Matt Engele, Kris Brash, Colin Boylan, Georgi Nemsadze, Vander Deyl, Gavin Beith, Tom Cowan.

Disappointing result on Saturday, We definelty seem to be better at home. It is encouraging to see Kirk bringing in a new face and looking to bring in some loan signings as well, with Rowe and Kerrigan as well on the sidelines as trialists. Kirk at least knows our weaknesses and is trying hard to fix them.
Maybe Rowe at the back for Stirling is not as fast as he used to be, but my worry for Arbroath is the fact that Stirling seem to be scoring for fun, and I would hope that we can shakle ex-lichite Colin McKinnon

Thought we deserved something out of todays game at Hamilton. The linesman was a cheat,Hamilton offside at least 6 times first half and the linesman never bothered to put his flag up once.Arbroath start the second half can you guess what with yes an offside from the same cheat of a linesman, and he couldn't keep his flag down after that.Hamiltons first goal was a bad mistake from Paul Browne, made a hash of a back pass, but we should have scored today and we have to start taking our chances.Thought our trialist striker Iain Diack from Albion Rovers was good and caused Hamilton problems with his pace.

Rather Division 3 with Arbroath than be a mindless success junkie - unless of course you happen to come from that particular corner of Glasgow, in which case, my sincere apologies (but what's wrong with Partick Thistle or Q Park?). At what point does humping every other team in Scotland become remotely interesting. There is NO competition in the Premier League so what are you wasting time and money for? If Celtic draw Arbroath in the cup, will it make you feel good putting 10 past us. It`s good to see the expensive squads of Celtic and Rangers mercenaries do relatively well in Europe -maybe the only games worth bothering about. If supporting a team is a matter of designer choice, then why not all opt for the best - maybe Real Madrid - no more connection than Celtic or Rangers has to the Old Firm camp followers with their sad sectarian baggage. Now your Second Division is a proper league with some element of uncertainty - we don't always know the outcome long before it starts. OK the fitba's generally crap but it is more character-building than another empty win against inferior opposition. (If we want fitba, you can always go abroad for that or see it on TV). I'm surprised an Old Firm saddo bothers with these webpages when there must be much higher level debates on your own sites - give me banter from Montrose or Forfar SUPPORTERS anytime.

I believe that the Carling sponsorship deal is one of a variety of fund raising initiatives being pursued by Marc Davies, one of the new members of the Committee. The Carling deal has been worked on for months and was underway before the shirt raffle. Part of the deal is that AFC promote Carling via sales of well priced product i.e. AFC can arrange sale at less than normal pub prices but still make a good profit for the club - hence the link with the Seaforth for the coming event, which if successful could be one of many to come. It is an AFC only deal, nothing to do with the Old Firm and does not replace Bells SFL links.
The Committee, Marc in particular, are working hard on various other fund raising ideas, and we are probably the most organised in this area that we have been for years. For this, they deserve our thanks and support.

Given our 40 year drought in the Forfarshire Cup having led the all-time winners list since inception, the thrashing from St J was hardly surprising. But is that an indication of how far we have fallen in a season? Even when outclassed in Div 1, we were taken apart on relatively few occasions. And where's the information on Carling sponsorship - does this merely replace Bells? Since Carling support the Old Firm and their dregs, I thought a campaign againat alcohol advertising in sport (but that might leave nothing). I'm surprised Buckhast don't sponsor any Scottish team.

And another thing. The announcements over the PA system at Gayfield need to be improved. The bloke wot does it seems a bit self-conscious but needs to articulate a bit more clearly. Shout it out mate - those around you in the stand may hear every word but we're stuggling on the terraces. And at many grounds key info - teamshetts, haltime scores, halftime draw - is announced twice so, since we miss most of the original message (sampling Gayfield's fine sanitation, queuing interminably for halftime refreshment) we definitely need it second time around, AND LOUDER AND CLEARER, OK?

Just a passing thought.........
I wasn't at gayfield last season, so I will need some other views, but this season where have the substitution boards gone. We now hand the ref a bit of paper, which the first time I seen it looked really dodgy. It really looks unproffesional. I don't know if this is happening else where, or just at Gayfield.
Maybe we could raise money and buy the club one of those electronic ones like they use in the SPL. There isn't a huge influx of substitutions so we would only need the one.
I dunno if anyone has any thoughts...............?

Re Gavin Swankie, I don't quite understand the outraged remarks by untitled below. I thought the report was remarkably fair. Gaving Swankie had an OK game on Saturday, turning defenders roving around well up front - and this the first full game back - BUT it must also be acknowledged that he does exert any physical presence (which his skills deserve)and certainly never threatens goal. He could be a great winger if he worked on the crossing. This is not to knock the young players but merely to point out galring gaps in thier game. He is still an asset for Arbroath and has potential to be more. But surely on our OWN website, the match reporters should be allowed to state a few facts or at least well-substantiated opinions? As for stirring up some artificial discrimination older versus younger players, we clearly need both.

Swankie would not claim his match on Saturday was his best ever but I would have to agree too that the comments were a bit on the harsh side, it is his first starting appearance in the first team for a couple of weeks and that he is working his way towards full match fitness. John McGlashan is a great motivator and a true professional and it was great to see him acknowledge Gavin when he went off for Herkes. I think it is good for Arbroath that Henslee, McMullen and Swankie all in the first team and Durno and Farquharson on the sidelines, I hope that we see more youngsters coming thru the ranks, and that Andy Webster is a good hero for them all.

i think the comments of the match reporter particularly the ones in regard to Gavin Swankies contribution are a disgrace. He had a perfectly good game on Sat not brilliant but contributed. I think the people doing the match reports should report on the game and keep their smart asses comments to themselves. It is very easy to criticritisise in a sarcastic manner but it is the way of the coward. Basically the person doing it sees himself as a fountain of knowledge on football, i seem to remember the same type of comment being levied at John McGlashan, Colin McGlashan flo etc etc., what type of team would we have if we listened to every whim

I would like to also thank those who worked really hard to sell tickets, with special thanks to Margaret Reid and Steve Swankie for their efforts. I would also like to acknowledge the work involved with the online ticket sales which made a noteable contribution to the number of tickets that were entered into the draw. There were several late entries made on Friday and I even took a call at 1am on Saturday morning to ask if another entry could be placed into the draw. I had a great time down at Soccer AM. Tim and Helen were really nice, as was everyone else who works with the show. Thanks again.

Chatted with some of the Committee yesterday and can confirm that nearly £9,000 was raised by shirt sponsorship raffle ticket sales which should create a profit of just over £8,000 after expenses. I'm sure that I speak for more than myself when I offer my thanks to all those that bought tickets. Congratulations to Adviva & Falconers, but the support from all of the local businesses that bought tickets is very greatly appreciated. Thank-you from the fans.
Can also confirm that ALL of this season's matches now have sponsors, and that the Committee continue to develop further sponsorship and fund-raising ideas. Let's not underestimate the effort & commitment that this takes, or the difference that this could make to the Manager's ability to maintain & develop the squad. Well done and thanks to the relevant Committee members.

I am from Arbroath and have supported Arbroath both home and away for many seasons, so can't believe my company's name will now be on the shirts. That was a bit uplifting today in the wind and the (occasional rain). Scoring twice in the first 10 minutes is the best start in years and they showed a bit of grit and determination to keep Alloa out (couple of last gasp clearance/saves) though the Alloa score was sloppy. Some folks never happy. Thought we had a real chance to give them a thrashing, to help our morale. Henslee is back to his best, Cargill real busy (and a touch of class), Swankie looked good in places (but needs more confidence). Note our three top scorers did the business again - would like to see a couple of the others on the sheet. But, we were the better of two mediocre teams. With this league being so tight these 6 pointers against relegation rivals are so crucial so let's keep doing them damage. And we're the only team in this league without an away win so time to rectify that soon. Fine Lichties

A better result today and a general improvement in the team. They are hopefully starting to gel together due to consistancy in team selection and positioning (although Andy Dow seems to be slightly confused as to where he should be playing).

Good day for Arbroath today on and off the pitch, I never seen Soccer AM, but if the sum is what was reported as an earlier entry then 8000grand is a lot better than nothing.
I think that would maybe my first choice line up for Arbroath today, with the current squad, maybe Cuisk in the midfield, when fit, but on today's display, McGlashan, Cargill, Dow, and Henslee were in top form. They all over something different, and I thought the determination and workrate of Henslee was amazing today. The Back four played well, and King gets better by each match. Graham played well upfront, Swankie did well, but perhaps needs more match practice after his injury, and well Peat had some fantastic saves.
We played well, but Alloa were poor, I think we need to build on this performance and we can take a lot out of it. We must have cleared twice off the line and if they had went in it may have been a different story. Only grumble is that sometimes we have possesion in space, but sometimes it feels like there is lack of support.
Great result today lads, hope you can keep it up! Smokies and Wine

re reserve game.
I heard that Swankie got one, and possibly McGlashan.
I was told that we didn't have that strong a team out. I believe Woodcock was in goal with Newall and Graham FB's. Browne also played in defence. McGlashan, Herkes, Durno made up the midfield with Farqhuson, Swankie and another striker making up the attack. I cannot remember who else played in defence. With our small pool, it was pretty much what you'd expect (no Cargill, no Cusick, no Graham, no Peat, no McMullen). Farqhuson was supposedly very impressive.
I heard we played well, although I'm unaware of the ages of the East Fife team, but we had 5 or 6 guys under 21. I'm just glad that somebody was able to find the net and hope some of it translates in the league games.

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhh. Another more than disappointing result in a deeply disappointing season. When will the painful and extended agony of underachievement come to an end. Tired of looking for pluses (did Saturday's result flatter the opposition. What we need is more human sacrifices or maybe guerilla smash and grabs. If we're going down it had better be in flames with all guns firing. I start to worry about our return game against in-from Forfar whom we played off the park 2 months back to end up with a goalless draw. It's too late to hope it all comes right with our reasonably good squad. So we had better start battling. Bbbbaaaannnzzzaaaiiii

If we need a bit more fight in the middle, why not bring Scott Peters back from Tayport. He wasn't the most skillful player in the team, but he could win the ball and mix it when the going got tough.I have it on good authority he would jump at the chance to come back. He only left because JB didn't like him. He always gave 110% every game, and this is the kind of players we want.

The shirt sponsorship raffle draw will take place on Soccer AM on Saturday 8th November. We are therefore setting a deadline that all tickets should be handed into Gayfield by close of business on Wednesday the 5th of November. This should allow enough time for the tickets to be sent down to the TV studio. Could anyone who has kindly taken tickets and offered to sell them on our behalf take note of this and have the tickets handed in by then. Thanks.

The signing of Shaw and Kerrigan raises the question - is experience more useful than youth in the lower leagues? Arbroath's storming season 2 yeasr ago in Div 1 relied heavily on oldtimers such as McKinnon, Rowe, Mallen as well as some of the current bunch. McGlashan is the first Lichtie featuring in the scoring charts for some years. Brownlie got a lot of (probably unjustified) stick for not giving youth its fling but Henslee and McMullen apart, none of the others has contributed significantly or consistenly. We were justifiably proud of the products of the youth system and they are useful squad players but not sufficiently productive to be at the core. So is relying on ageing journeymen pros the way to survive at this level?

Not to mention George Rowe. That would be a real test since they're running away with Div 3. And I can recall going out to Stirling in the cup at least a couple of times (often a replay required). Still, emboldened by our improved League Cup performance nothing is impossible

Greg Henslee got the man of the match yesterday,i thought Andy Cargill was MOTM,but well done to Henslee.Didn't play that well yesterday but we played better than Dumbarton and got the points and now we are only 9 points off second top.George Shaw done well but is lacking Match fitness, don't think we should re-sign Kerrigan he wasn't that good before so why have him back.

Agreed - the team is trying so deserve encouragement. Since the first game, I think we should be able to match most teams (except Morton, Airdrie) but have not been able to capitalise (turn draws into wins). We need key players to be fit and a bit of luck to turn it around and go on a run. So yes they need all the encoruagement going. As for casting aspersions on the sainted memory of Colin McGlashan - anyone who scores regularly for Arbroath is a hero (and damn few of those). McGlashans have done well for us so maybe a family check would yield the next striker. C'way the Lichties - I'll be following on the BBC internet videoprinter/World Service radio

Why is our support week in week out so awful? Im not just talking about the size of it either. The atmophere at Gayfield these days is crap. Remember when we were near the bottem of Div3 10 years ago and every week there was a great support at Gayfield with singing for 90mins? Instead these days all that happens is moaning at the players constantly. Why not get behind the team and create an atmosphere? If we did then maybe we would get more support each week. Lets encourage the players and get a few songs going on Saturday. It's a crunch game against Dumarton, who I think are easily worse than us, and maybe if we encourage the lads they might respond with better football to watch. LETS GET BEHIND THE LADS ON SATURDAY. SUPPORT THE TEAM INSTEAD OF CRITICIZING THEM CONSTANTLY. AWAY THE LICHTIES!!!

After reading all the statements below i hope "Farflung" is not slagging Colin McGlashan as he was in his "twighlight" years when he scored the goals to keep us in the 2nd division and also the goals to get us promoted to the 1st division. This leads me on to say that sometimes you need an "experienced" striker rather than a youngster to score goals when you are struggling and in George Shaws case he has done this in all his career (just like Dibble McGlashan) apart from one season at Forfar. I would love to see another experienced striker at Gayfield Park in Paul Tosh as apart from scoring goals Tosh also has PACE and that is something which is lacking at Arbroath FC.. I would agree with the "Laird 0 Elliot" in that apart from Morton all the other clubs which Arbroath FC have played in the league this season have not impressed me and this makes it all the more dissapointing. I think we have a good goalkeeper and our defence is well covered, our midfield (when Cusick is fit) is excellent and it is only our forward line which needs strengthened. Another player who i would like to see at Gayfield could be Paddy Flannery who would leave Dumbarton if giving a chance as the fans slate him there for some reason? (although he has been their top goalscorer for years).

Another unglorious failure on Saturday, and absolutly nothing for us Maroonies to get aroused aboot. The annoying thing about this season is apart from Morton, the teams we have encountered have been as bad or not worse than us, which makes the feeling of continual defeat even harder to accept...And finding out that ex\lichties are scoring for fun at other clubs, does not make the hurt any easier.Im a great believer in looking forward and not back,so the players who have left and are doing a job for someone else are doing it in a league below us,ie COLIN MCKINNON..SO could they have still done a job for us,,we will of course never know the answer to the question..but we are all aware already this season, that not one of our favourites is going to give us 20 goals a season, and I am going to be controversial and say when will one of our :home bred youngsters: start lasting 90 minutes and put their own stamp on a game. Coming off the bench and making a contribution is all well and good, but its aboot time some of them began at 3 o clock, and came off the pitch at 4.45 soaking in sweat. It would benefit the club and team mates, and themselves when bigger clubs come hunting for young talent,ie A.Webster esquire....

I think we need a new manager to get the most out of the players as I do not think that stevie kirk will get the respect or the commitment out of them. Also, we hardly have a pool of players big enough to generate the need to perform to be included in the squad as the players we have are pretty much guaranteed a starting place anyway. We need to find the right man for the job, who may have the ability to find decent players on a budget as tight as ours, someone who can gain the respect of the players and supporters. I think all the youngsters should be given a chance to prove themselves if they are ready for first team action as it looks like we need some competition for places in the team . All this talk of getting old players like shaw are just daft, next somebody will be trying to lure super ally out of retirement, let’s not rush in and sign any old dumplin as we have had our share of them over the past few seasons.

Why should Colin McKinnon (or Jim Mercer or even Stevie Amman) return to Arbroath when there teams are on the up. I am not totally joking when I suggest Paul Brownlie who did not a bad job in the lower leagues (and before his dad became manager) - no such constraint now. That should be controversial. At least no-one suggesting Colin mcGlashan

The big problem with the Red Lichties just now is that apart from "Bull" Graham, we have no strikers. Although Swankie,Herkes and Durno are forward players none of them are out & out strikers. Brownlie when he was here was only signing defenders and midfielders as opposed to getting more goalscorers. Also not having John Cusick just now is a major blow as he is one of our top players and also a goal threat. I thought Andy Cargill was our best player against the Fifers closely followed by King, McMullan & Dow. One thing i would say was at least there was a lot more fight on Saturday than of late. Just now if Graham or McGlashan (or Cussie when fit) do not score we are stuck. WE NEED TO SIGN STRIKERS - AND SOON

A terrible display yesterday!
Only two AFC players showed the required commitment in my opinion (Cargill and McMullen). If Kirk cannot get them to at least run around then he has got to go (should have gone when Brownlie went anyway).
East Fife were poor, but they at least had someone who knew how to put a ball in a net. Funny how they managed to get him (Nicholas) while we sat on our hands.
I hope we can start to turn it around next week, but with barely a striker on our books it isn't looking to good right now.

It was a case of hard luck yesterday. The few lichties who seen the game, seen a hard working Lichtie team who huffed and puffed for 90 minutes. Dow or Cargill were my men of the match, as they both were always on the ball, but at the same time a lot of passes going astray. We lacked movement at set peices and R. Graham missing upfront really didn't help us. It was encouraging to see a few shots fly in from outside the 18 yarder as some of them were pretty close, and all it needs is a deflection to end up in the net. I also think their forward knew what he was doing and dived so Rennie would be sent off, both challenges very soft.
I think we need some luck, 99.9% of teams who lose their manager always seem to win the next match, we didn't. East Fife had a small but loud support, and had to be given credit for picking up on our sponsership deal, and singing "where's your sponsor gone?"
Kirk has the same squad as Brownlie so not much can be improved on the pitch, but he defently wasn't as vocal as Brownlie, and seemed to given more encouragement.
Overall we deserved a point, and I am sure glad that Browne re-signed, as with Denham retiring and now Rennies suspension looming, he has been a key asset to the team.
C'mon the Lichties - smokies and wine

This quality versus geography issue seems a bit heated. Tend to agree that young locals would be ideal but may be thin on the ground. What Lichties followers demand is success (call that lack of failure) so whatever achieves that, provides it does not jeopardise the longterm existence of the club is sufficient - not that it is being fulfilled right now. For the past 30 years, Arbroath teams have always had a fair quota of west-coast based part-timers. The issue is no different to the top clubs - for instance, amusing to see Rangers fans accepting Italian/Spanish catholics so long as they're good and we know how few Scottish internationals get a game for either Old Firm. I read that some clubs (including Montrose?) had, as a cost-saving and perhaps team-building measure decided to engage players from the region. How do Arbroath manage their training - do all players get along to Gayfeld on Tuesdays and Wednesdays or do some distant ones train with other clubs? Anyway, I don't give a toss who plays on Saturday as long as they grind out a result against the fly Fifers. Would a win would be too much to expect?

Not me thats the plonker. As Always, it is the Fool that prooves the rule. The reason that you are able to pass commnent on the 'quality' of the Arbroath players, without looking more stupid than you already appear to be, is by passing comment on their ability, results and league position WITHOUT needing to take into account where they actually live. Sorry if that was too hard for you to understand first time round. Are you gerneraly stupid or just genetically predisposed to stupidity .. in other words .. are you a Brechin or Forfar supporter?

Regarding the Resignation of Youth Co-ordinator Gordon Wallace.
Over the past years I have attended many of our Youth and Reserve matches, so I feel in a position to state some facts. Three years ago when our Youth side had a very succesful season, almost all their games were at Gayfield. This season they have not been played there at all. When Gordon Wallace took charge they were full-time, now we are all part-time. They also had a young lad called Keith, who helped Gordon, now he is on his own. In recent matches at Condor, visiting sides have 3 or 4 coaches with them, while we ask one person to do everything (no wonder he packed it in). Anybody going to matches will know Gordon has still got bags of enthusiasm for the game and no doubt he will remain in football. Lets hope Mike Cargill gets better support in the future.

I note that the small minded parochial thinking lives on in the Website News. It should be possible to critisise or praise any or all the players on their individual merits .. but .. to bemone the exodus of Steve Florence and Daren Spink because they were local players!!! Giz a Break!! Would that be the same Steve Florence who is now playing for Forfar reserves and has been replaced by David King at left back?? Or Darren Spink who is now still looking for a Club and has been replaced by either Paul Brown or Steven Rennie at Centre Half?? An Arbroath team composed of good local players is a great ideal. An Arbroath team composed of good YOUNG local Players would be even more ideal. However .. lets recognise that the important word there is GOOD and not LOCAL. All other things being equal then heyyy .. go for local players. But.. unless all other things ARE equal then lets go for as much quality as possible. At least then as supporters we can argue the toss over how good, bad or indifferent a player is without appearing ever so slightly narrow minded.

In reply to "realist" from Arbroath. How does he know Brechin spent vast sums of money? The only player they spent a trenfer fee on was Grant Johnston. The thing that always puzzled me with brownlie was the claimed friendships with other mangers and agents which promised much but ended up with very little decent signings. While i dont think the local lads are fautless they should have been given more oppurtunties instead of bringing in another average player. We all know that brownlie had little respect from the majority of players , proven by the number of fall outs throught the years. Have to agree a little with Grant and realist,Brownlie deserves some credit for his first two seasons, but last season and this season have been his downfall and i am glad he has left.A few bad signings Fallon,Gardner,Connaghen,Gow etc, cost the club alot of money,so he has to take some of the blame for having no money to spend on playeers. So who now Steve Kirk has taken over as manager for now,but i would go for a fresh start, the only people i can think of out of a job are Paul Hegarty,Dave McPherson,Dave Winnie and Billy McLaren,or even Steve Guppy and Bobby Peta as player managers (only joking). Simon Lichtie- Sye Webster i think runs the 36-0 club supportes team.

Credit must go to Brownlie for getting AFC into the 1st Div. More credit must be given to him for keeping us there for 2 seasons. He has also been unfortunate with injuries to several of his key players. He also had to work within the tight financial budget given to him.
However, his downfall is that over this season and last he has underachieved with the players he had at his disposal. No one expected to stay in Div 1 for long, however it was the manner in which we were relegated that was hard to take. Also, his tactics over that period can also be called into question. He is constantly tinkering with the system and his substitutions leave alot to be desired. He does not have the best track record when it comes to signing players, something you need when you have little or no money.
Congratulations to Brownlie for all he has achieved at AFC. We will all remember stuffing Falkirk at Brockville to condemn the to "relegation" but I think it was time for him to go.
The only question left now, "Who will replace him?". Martin O'Neill is linked with ever other job.

Great to see an Arbroath side dominate a game last night at Bayview. They showed great attitude and commitment (a lot of shouting) but it was only our virtual first tream versus their reserves and we scraped through 2-3. Kirk. Ferrier and Gorman seemed to be calling the shots

Have to agree to some extent with Grant from Arbroath. Brownlie probably had many faults as a manager and one of those was being so overtly passionate about getting the players to do what he asked them to do on the pitch. Perhaps the shouting was a bit OTT but at least you could see (and hear!!) that he was wanting the players to pass the ball and to make chances. I didnt personaly hear him asking anything that might not reasonably be expected of an Arbroath player. The small minded parochial attitude of some of the supporters at times is awsome. Gavin Swankie (for example) can fail to hold the ball up 9 times out of 10 ... but then on the 10th attempt link up and create something positive. Paul Durno (for example) can be spectacularly good against Falkirk .. and spectacularly anonomous against Stenhousemuir. Ewan Graham (for example) can be consistantly inconsistant at first team and reserve team matches. BUT .. since they are local lads they not only get the benefit of the doubt, they get folk writing into the Guestbook complaining that they are not being given a chance.
To take a part time Club into Division one and then to keep them there against all the odds is in itself some achievement. It is noteworthy that Brechin City, having spent vast sums of money in comparison, are struggling to the same extent as we did last season. However, at the end of the day, it is results that matter and they probably havent been as good as they should be so a change in managerial direction might be no bad thing. But it shouldnt be forgotten that Brownlie did his best for Arbroath Football Club and devoted his time and energy and 'enthusiasm' without reservation. At the end of his reign it seems that he decided the timing of his own departure. It is a bit small minded that some supporters take such satisfaction in a guy loosing his job. Anyhow... a team is only as good as its last game.. so at least the only way is up!!

Was at the reserve League Cup tie tonight & Arbroath won deservedly 3-1. Players I recognised were. Mitchell, King, Browne, McGlashan, Durno, Herkes, Graham & Dow Posted this on the Ef website Arbroath went throught to the 2nd round of the reserve League Cup with a deserved 3-1 victory at a chilly Bayview Park Stadium tonight. Both sides were full of first team players but whilst none of the home X1 started against Dumbarton on Saturday, Arbroath's side was virtually the team beaten at Stenhousemuir. Stevie Nicholas played from the start but was still listed as a Trialist. Ross Graham looked good up front for the Smokies & in truth if Marc Graham hadn't made two superb saves it could have been a heavier defeat. One save from a point blank Herkes header was top class! EF's goal came from a Gilberto header! Yes a Gilberto HEADER! Team Graham, Russell, Miller,Mortimer, Linton (u19) Blair, Love, Nicholas, Ogilvie, Lynes & Gilbert.

Would that be the same Dave Baikie who along with the committee put us in the large financial hole that we are still in today.
I think you will find that Baikie paid way over the odds for players (hello Mr Good). These same players he couldn't ultimately get to play above 8th in the 2nd division.
Brownlie suffered as the highly paid players went elsewhere (hello George Rowe). He then had to work with no money for transfers and very little for wages.
The simple fact is that Brownlie never received the credit he was due for taking up a struggling team and keeping them up when they were the only part time team in the league. When they did well it was down to Baikie and when they struggled it was down to Brownlie.
I will never forget when Brownlie set Arbroath on their longest run of wins in their history and when the run ended the team was booed off. At you get fans here saying they never rated him anyway, give me a break.
First Paul Brownlie was hounded out(we could have used him this season) for being John's son and now the father has alos been hounded out.

Good Riddance To John Brownlie. The Best manager in recent History! He has totally destroyed the club (With the help off the spineless board). Everyone realises that the only reason he gained promotion a couple of years ago was due to the squad inherited from Dave Baikie. Once Brownlie started introducing his own players, thats when the preverbial sh*t hit the fan!. The YTS scheme aimed at bringing the clubs youngsters through has been totally demolished (Developed and funding achieved by Dave Baikie). If the board had any decency they would have given Brownlie his marching orders when he offered his resignation at the end of last season following the defeat at Alloa. Since then, giving Brownlie there support, he has introduced more average players who have under achieved this season. I wonder who will be interested in this position, considering there shall be no funds available for a new manager. The only good thing that can be taken from this escapade is the comfort off knowing the vast majority of people who backed arbroath for relegation at tasty odds of 12-1. Roll On!

A sad day indeed, he was the best manager in my time supporting the lichties.
I cannot see how we possibly can get anyone better, history should have at least taught us that much.
Additionaly a new manager will still have no money to spend and will still not be able to bring in players from other clubs.
Brownlie was far from perfect, but his good deeds far outweighed his bad and I wish him all the best with any other club (unless he ends up at Montrose).
It will be interesting though to see who gets the blame for everything from the pies being cold to players injuries now JB has fallen on his sword.
